Facing danger at each turn, every clue she follows leaves her another step behind. Will she ever find Caleb? Can Caleb endure the unthinkable cruelty of civil war prisons long enough for her to rescue him? Or will she and Nathaniel meet a violent end?

Conecuh (Cah-NECK-ah ) is a story woven around and through the actual events in the mysterious and ironic life of Private Caleb Garner, CSA, during the most tumultuous time in American history. Whatever happened to Caleb? History has left us blind, but there are clues. Conecuh explores one very real possibility.

Guest Post – Herb Hughes
Novel – Conecuh

What does it mean for a novel to win a literary award? For an author, it validates thousands of hours of work. For a reader, it means you’ve selected a quality book. I was honored and humbled to receive an award for my civil war novel, Conecuh (Cah-NECK-ah).

How was Conecuh born? I had published one civil war novel, Tennessee Yankee, when my cousin, Sherry Garner, told me she had an amazing story about her husband’s great-great-uncle, Caleb Garner, from Conecuh County, Alabama. After reading about the hardships Caleb endured, I decided to write his story, but I felt it needed something more, so I created Emily Rose, his fiancé, and Nathaniel Whiteeagle, a part Cherokee slave.

Caleb fought in most major battles, dealt with illness, and was wounded at least twice. As the war raged on, Caleb was reported as being killed but was later reclassified as missing in action.

Emily Rose decided to find her fiancé, so she and Nathaniel, a family slave who was more like family than slave, traveled a dangerous land trying to track Caleb down. Emily was determined to find Caleb, and Nathaniel was determined to keep Emily alive in a country devastated by war.

They traveled through and between two armies trying to slaughter each other. They were attacked by ruthless renegades living on the land and robbing unsuspecting travelers. Forced to endure as many hardships as Caleb had, their chances of survival were poor.

After hundreds of hours of research, I was halfway finished writing the rough draft when Sherry told me the genealogist had made a mistake; they weren’t related to Caleb after all. It was too late. I was hooked. The story was too good and had to be told.
