Book Description:

Do you have a story in you?

Do you know how to write it or how to tell it? Creating Stories has the answers. Hank Quense, the author of more than twenty books, tells you how to do it. He believes that stories come from the melding of three elements: getting ideas, story design and story-telling. Ideas have to come from the author. Creating Stories covers the last two. The book concentrates on developing characters including such rarely discussed requirements such as a dominant reader emotion and the character's biography. Plots are also covered in depth and a number of graphics are included to illustrate complex points. Another topic discusses subplots and how to utilize them and how to nest them within the main plot. A separate chapter discusses the relationship between the plot and the emotional arcs. Other topics covered are: character arcs, scene design, point-of-view, writing voice.

Genre:  Urban Fantasy
Publisher:  Laurel Elite Books
Release date:   May 2023
Content Rating:  PG + M: Mild profanity and the lead character lives in a mental and verbally abusive household. The theme of living in an unhealthy household and getting help is a theme in the book.
Book Description:

High school is stressful enough without having to save your town from evil incarnate.

But Starla never really had a choice in the matter.

Starla, an aspiring artist, lives an uneasy life with her mom after the sudden loss of her dad. She seeks refuge at the home of her grandmother, Ma Mère, where she feels safe. As a teenager, Starla begins to demonstrate magical abilities. Among them, she discovers her hands glow with purple light and she can understand the squeaks of her pets.

Her new abilities are no surprise to Ma Mère, who reveals a long-hidden family secret of power and magic. Starla's new abilities have been passed down for generations and were awakened by the shift in power when Hel, an ancient evil being, escaped containment.

Hel and those under its power are determined to gain possession and control over the citizens of East Pine and the magical dimensions concealed there. Starla and her friends refuse to let that happen.

If she hopes to thwart Hel's insatiable quest for power and regain control over it before East Pine and all of the dimensions of existence are destroyed, Starla will have to trust her instincts and find the courage to harness the ancestral magic she was born to wield.

Mental Health Matters: why writing stories about mental health matters & what it can teach us in real life
Terrilynn and I both have had experience working as counselors with troubled youth. We believe that one of the underrepresented topics of conversation in schools, at home, and in society at large is mental health. Each of us deals with the stresses and conflicts of life in our own way but much of how we learn to cope with our successes and failures is from the modeling provided by our family, close friends, teachers, and people we admire. While mental health is important to us all, most people have not had training in effective communication or coping techniques.
There are some methods of dealing with stress and life’s difficulties that are healthier than others. We hope by drawing attention to some less-effective methods of coping with anger, sadness, fear, conflict, and disappointment, that conversations might take place to discuss how people might make healthier choices.
We believe having someone who listens well and lets you know they care, like Mrs. Wycliffe for Starla, and Dougie’s family for Dougie, will help a lot of people work through their difficulties more effectively and they will make more satisfying decisions. We encourage everyone to learn basic listening and communication skills, and how to resolve conflicts without resorting to violence.

Meet the Author:

Terrilynn Moore is a retired police officer who now lives as an artist and storyteller. She expresses her passion through her words and art. The book, Starla, was largely written but not completed until after she reconnected with Quade B Smith after a high school reunion. Quade has prior experience as a co-author of a non-fiction book called, The Bark of the Cony.

Author Interview with Gabriella Fiorletta
What made you write a book about love?
Love is such a complex word because it means so many different things to so many different people (think about all the love songs that have ever been written). What we DO know is how love makes us feel. When the Covid-19 pandemic began, hit my husband was deployed overseas and not only was the world in chaos, but MY World was turned upside down. We watched as family members couldn’t say goodbye to their loved ones who had passed, we couldn’t travel to see family, school was shut down and the isolation was a heavy burden. I felt truly hopeless. When I tucked my daughter into bed and she said, “Mommy when I look at you, I see love”. Despite the chaos I knew I was doing something right. I pray my book allows children to feel how deeply loved they are despite what may be happening in the world around them.
There are many books out there about love. What makes yours different?
I am proud that my book allows readers the opportunity to explore, discuss and dive into all the different aspects of love. It opens the door for meaningful dialogue. Whether it is a parent leaving on a deployment, a child not being included to play during recess, or a neighbor coming over to show support. It’s important for children to recognize healthy love and understand empathy and compassion.
Do you have another profession besides writing?
I worked in the public school system for many years. I began my career in an Autism cluster at an elementary school and transitioned into high school guidance counseling. I currently teach kindergarten at a classical Latin school
What advice would you give other mom writers?
We always have little eyes on us watching our every move. It is important for children to see mom doing something that fills their cup.  It was important for me to do something that I was passionate about outside of being a mom but still feeling that my children came first. My advice for moms is to just write. Anywhere. Anytime. Write.
Where do you write?
I used to write anywhere I could (stop light, park, restaurant… you name it) Many of my ideas would be recorded on my phone and then later transcribed. I also like to keep a bedside journal for the random nights when I wake up to my crazy ideas. Just recently, my husband transformed one of our closets into a writing nook. It’s such a cool space to hangout and create.
Do you write every day?
My goal is to write every day and I’m trying to dedicate a time that works best with my schedule.  I’m still learning how to juggle mom life, working full-time and writing.
Where do you get inspiration for your stories?
Most of my inspiration for my stories come from my children. Children are life’s greatest creators and teachers. They say the funniest things and ask the best questions.
What genre do you write and why?
I’m most passionate about writing children’s books specifically historical biographical picture books. Ironically, that is not the first genre that I published.
Who is the most famous person you have ever met?
I met Mariah Carey back in the 90s! Mariah and her then husband Tommy Mottola would dine at this local Italian restaurant that our family business would sell products to. The owner told my parents she was coming for dinner and the rest is history.
Any Hobbies?
I absolutely LOVE to dance! I will be teaching pre-k and kindergarten dance classes this fall.

Meet the Author:

Gabriella Fiorletta studied English literature at the University of South Florida. She is a former teacher, guidance counselor, and stay-at-home mom. When she is not reading a book to her three young children, you can find her enjoying the beaches of sunny Florida, cooking her favorite Italian meals, or planning her family’s next RV adventure. Writing a children’s book has been a dream of hers since she was a little girl. One night when she was tucking her daughter Charlotte into bed, she pointed to her mom’s heirloom necklace and said, “Mom, when I look at you, I see love.” With that, the foundation of Gabriella’s first children’s book was laid.

Guest Post: The Difference between Self-Care and Self-Value by Rebecca Mann Kelly
There’s so much buzz today about the importance of self-care for women. I agree that self-care is important, but I would propose that self-value - which is very different - is significantly more important.
Once, I was talking to a friend and she was saying she had been working on improving her sense of self-value.  And I smugly thought to myself, “I don’t have an issue with self-value.  Because I have a good work/life balance, I exercise regularly and sleep well, and I quit coffee because it gave me an ulcer.”  But the next morning I woke up out of a dead sleep to the voice of God saying to me: “You don’t have self-value.” And I’m so glad he pointed that out, so I could work on it.
Self care means, “I take care of myself.” This includes enlisting help in your life so you don’t burn out.  It means making investments (time and money) in yourself. And it means taking care of your heart - staying in touch with your emotions and needs and cultivating a healthy emotional well-being.
Self-value, on the other hand, means, “I believe that I am valuable, a unique treasure, an original.” Having self-value is a lot harder than having self-care, and it’s also a lot more important.  Self value says, “I believe that I am one of a kind, and that the special combination of my mind, my heart, and my experiences brings something to the table that cannot be replicated by any other person on earth. I believe am more than my ability to make money or be a good wife or mother, because I have unlimited potential. I believe I have a purpose and I can leave a mark on the earth that no one else can.”
Some women avoid pursuing a revelation of their own value because they think it’s being prideful. Women tend to stay small on purpose because they don’t want to be accused of behaving as self-important. Some women don’t seek to see their value because their close relationships expect them to stay small and quiet. Sometimes the way to discovering self-value is to see your own worth enough to stop tolerating mistreatment.
If you can’t yet see your full value, the great news is - you can do something about it.
“You are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you.” (Isaiah 43:4)

A Life’s Journey by Robert Andrew Provan
Research for my books has been the culmination of a lifelong journey of being a “highly observant nature nerd”. At the age of four I sailed with my family on a cruise ship from NYC to England. I was absolutely fascinated by the ocean as we sailed across the raging tempest that is the North Atlantic in winter. At the age of five, I informed my parents that I would be joining the United States Navy.  They of course patted me on the head and said, “that’s nice Son”.
During my elementary school years along with my family we watched every Jacques Cousteau, Richard Attenborough, and National Geographic TV show. The family never missed Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom. I was fascinated by all things water. I frequently snorkeled in the cold mountain waters of New England trying to emulate Captain Cousteau, looking for fish, salamanders, and turtles. Like most kids I was a sponge for information on a topic which intrigued me. I had found mine.
Fifteen years after telling my parents that I would be joining the Navy this childhood prediction came to fruition. Following my Navy technical school training I asked for and received a home port assignment out of the continental United States. Against all odds I landed the highly coveted home port of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. From Pearl we crisscrossed the vast Pacific and Indian Oceans as well as the Sea of Japan, South China Sea, Russia’s Sea of Okhotsk, and Australia’s Coral Sea.
When at sea during off work hours I could most often be found up on deck. Frequently the only person on deck when not required by duty. Most sailors tired of the view of the seemingly endless sea. I did not.  From humpback whales in Hawaii to albatross soaring thousands of miles from land I soaked it in.
Now a Florida resident and long-time diver/snorkeler and fisherman I still watch every legit nature show that comes out. The basis of my knowledge for my nature-based children’s books is path notes from the grand journey we call life.
