Happy Birthday to Me!!

I'm linking up with The Sunday Post at Caffeinated Reviewer and The Sunday Salon at Readerbuzz.

It was my birthday on Friday and I'm now forty-four years old. Eeek! My super lovely boyfriend not only got me a fab new pair of walking shoes (I recycled a disintegrating pair of espadrilles so still only five pairs of shoes in my wardrobe!) but he also arranged a surprise lunch at The Secret Garden in Melle. We've visited this cafe-restaurant before and I think it's my favourite of all the ones we've tried locally. I tried a new-to-me dish, a Flammekueche, which is like a rectangular pizza with a very thin base. It was piled with roasted pepper strips and julienne carrot, crumbled tofu and rocket leaves (arugula). Delicious, but I forgot to take a pic until I'd eaten most of it so you'll need to imagine! Dave enjoyed his beef burger too.
I received generous Etsy and Amazon vouchers as well so am looking forward to future Shopping Opportunities!

My vegan cooking adventures contined with baking Quick Biscuits and Fruit Scones, neither of which were actually particularly adventurous because it was simply a question of swapping the butter for vegetable oil spread and dairy milk for soya! However I also had a stab at Vegan Mayonnaise and this was a revelation. So much easier than the egg version and a far nicer taste than the commercial products. I'd recommend this Minimalist Baker recipe here to everyone.

In bookish news, I'm delighted to be this month's Bookish Bingo winner over at Chapter Break. I matched 22 squares. If you don't already play their Bookish Bingo, why not download May's grid and give it a try? It's fun!

  1. Happy birthday! The restaurant looks like a lovely spot for a celebration. And now you can think about how you might want to spend those vouchers....

Butter is almost sacred to me, so I don't think I'll ever become vegan. I think it's fascinating that you are trying out various concoctions with a vegan twist.

    Have a good week!

    1. I want to start making my own pizzas and just need to find a reliable dough recipe, preferably one that doesn't need all that flamboyant swirling in the air!

  12. Happy birthday! 3 of us at Books of My Heart have birthdays this week - Robin, Melanie and me. I went out with my daughter to a new restaurant and they asked if we had been there before. We said no and they brought us a free flourless chocolate torte to share for dessert. Yummy!

Have a lovely weekend and Happy reading!
